Sunday - Homecoming 2004

Sunday morning starts with the Prayer Breakfast in the Dining Hall.  The alumni love
to gather for food and fellowship.  Janie Owens' husband, Steve,
gave a very inspirational devotional at the breakfast.

Our chapel, which holds so many memories for us,  awaits in the early morning mists.
Today we worship together again, as we did as students,  and we sadly honor all
the alumni that we have lost in the past year.

A chance for a visit before the service starts.  Bill Kelly visits with Terre and Don Kelly.
Charlie Underwood muses while Hazel Guthrie Underwood chats with
Barbara Lewis Estes.  Lee and James Smith study the program.
Irvin and Barbara Dean Hallford and Viola Robbins Starr are seated in the background.

Our Sunday service starts with Jeff Reynolds, the Presbyterian Chaplain,  calling us  to worship.

The alumni choir blessed us with beautiful music.   Cathy Kelly Parker,
Angie Brach Parkerson,  Bob Welden behind Angie, Rose Chastain, Dale Denham Shaffield,
Linda Means Kelly, Pat Chastain, Glenda Voiles Arrowood, Broward Strickland, unknown lady in red,
Susan Houghtaling Odom, Gene Vinson behind Susan, Pat Wright McNulty and Carol Dickerson Dunbar.
Jeff Reynolds led the choir. With very little practice, they sounded wonderful.

The scripture was read by Pat Chastain, Gene Vinson, Bob Welden, and Broward Strickland.

 Remembering Friends Already Home

We said goodbye to Harry Bingham, Ronald Coleman,
Anne Grist Dickerson, Alice Brown English, Harold J. Henslee, Andy McBee,
Gerald Lamb and a beloved teacher - Lois McClintock Ellis.
The loss of Ione Thurmond Dickerson touched many hearts.

The ceremony for remembering the alumni who have passed away in
the past year is very moving.  Susan Houghtaling Odom read the name and
a memorial bell tolled.  Anyone having a connection with the person named
stood up in honor.  A carnation was placed in the chancel vase at the
front of the chapel and Susan said, "For the gift of this life..." and the congregation
responded, "We thank you God".

The Alumni Choir sang a beautiful rendition of  "In the Garden".
Dess Oliver and some of his shop students crafted  the beautiful cross.

The Rev. Dr. Ken Meeks  of the Northeast Georgia Presbytery delivered the Sunday
message, "You'll Never Walk Alone".    We sang our school hymn "God's Keeping", then
Jeff Reynolds closed the service and  bid us goodbye until next year.
 A wonderful Homecoming service.

After the chapel service, Don and Terre Kelly  stroll down to the dining hall for lunch.
Dennis Dickerson, on the right, walks with them.

Jack Ayers and June Grist Coleman stopped to chat after the service.
Two old friends - happy to see each other.

Susan Houghtaling Odom stopped to give her old friend, Broward Strickland, a hug.
What a nice suit Broward!  In the background, on the right, Viola Robbins Starr,
Martha Ann Cornette Mann, Barbara Lewis Estes.

Once again Teresa did a fabulous job and lunch was delicious.  We enjoyed the good food
surrounded by friends, old and new.  Dennis Dickerson in the foreground.

Dale Denham Shaffield standing in the background. James and Lee Smith and
Viola Robbins Starr with Alice Hempel Kamin and husband, Ford.

A closer photo of this table of friends  Sarah Garner Bondurant, Terre Kelly, Don Kelly,
Carol Dickerson Dunbar and Bill Dunbar.  What a fine group.

Harold took a very nice picture of his wife Gail and Dennis Dickerson

A beautiful picture of Bill and Carol Dickerson Dunbar.  Carol is holding a carnation
that she and Dennis Dickerson placed in the vase for their mother - Ione Thurmond Dickerson, class of 1931

Dr. Kathy Sparks Breithaupt came by to hug her favorite basketball rival, Dale Denham Shaffield.

Homecoming weekend  was a great success, thanks to this wonderful lady,  Janie Owens.
Here she introduces our oldest alumna who was celebrating her birthday.

We are give Miss Ruby Brown van Rooyan '25 a big hand and sang Happy Birthday to her.

Janie Owens and Bill Kelly.
Two friends who work tirelessly for love of the alumni of Rabun Gap.  We treasure these two.
Homecoming 2004 was a great success.  We had so much fun -  can't wait till Homecoming 2005.

Not wanting Homecoming to end, a few of us gathered at Jimmy's Spring Ridge Creamery
before heading home.    A dish of Jimmy's ice cream topped off the weekend.

Harold and Gail Thurmond.  Dale Denham Shaffield with Lee and James Smith.
Are they all deciding what flavor to get?
Hazel Guthrie Underwood - photographer

Barbara Lewis Estes had no trouble with choosing a flavor.  Jimmy Moore gave her a sample
of every flavor.  Just check out all those spoons.  She appears to have enjoyed each and every one.

Harold and Gail Thurmond are having a hard time choosing.
Let's see chocolate, no lemon, no butter pecan, no....

Pat Wright McNulty and husband, Ken were enjoying the ice cream and the antics.

Dale Denham Shaffield gave James one last hug - to last until Homecoming 2005.

Hazel Guthrie Underwood quickly got her final hug from James Smith as well.
James had a great time at Homecoming without a doubt.

Jimmy Moore convinced Barbara Lewis Estes that it was good luck to kiss his bear.
Can't believe she fell for that.

Pat Wright McNulty and Ken share a table with Beverly Guthrie Lougher  who is giving a hug
to  her favorite new alum - Charlie Underwood.

Homecoming 2004 is now history.  We have many memories to share
and pictures of dear friends to treasure. We gathered for our annual
meeting and we said goodbye to Gregg Ziegler and welcomed
John Marshall.  We worshiped together on Sunday. We ate, we partied,
we hugged, we cried and we all want to do it again.  Thank you
Addie Corn and Andrew Ritchie for giving us this wonderful heritage
that we can share year after year.  We are blessed.
 See you in June, 2005.
