RABUN GAP NACOOCHEE HOMECOMING 2005 |
SATURDAY - June 4, 2005 (Cont'd) |
Anyone who has ever driven through Wolffork Valley loves this scene. Harold Thurmond '60 certainly captured the beauty of the Wolffork Baptist Church and the valley surrounding. |
Dr. Victor C. Nix 41' JC is a very talented wood carver. These birds were beautifully done and everyone enjoyed them. |
Harold Thurmond's Grand Canyon with Rainbow is a "once in a lifetime" photograph and quite stunning. |
| Carol Dickerson Dunbar made these Russian Matryoshka Dolls with her granddaughter. Carol has many talents and this is a family treasure. |
Dale Denham Shaffield entered two unique and beautiful photos taken on campus one foggy morning. The spider web, heavy with dew, is really unusual. Carol Dickerson Dunbar, who is a master at gardening, captured the beauty of two of her unusual plants. |
The lobby of the Arts and Technology Building is very grand and elegant. |
Susan Houghtaling Odom and Carol Dickerson Dunbar enjoying a brief rest while touring the Art Show. |
Checking out the condition of the columns on Hodgson Hall for Dennis Dickerson, Susan tries to avoid the camera and hide behind the column. Unfortunately the column was not wide enough. |
| The school we love so well. |
| The Alumni Meeting was very interesting this year. Janie Owens brought tears to our eyes with her "goodbye". She is a treasure to the alumni body and we are all grateful for all she has done for us. John Marshall fielded questions from several alums with concerns about the school. |
Rodney Pless was instrumental in arranging for a group of Rabun Gap students to come to Camp Highroad where he worked in Virginia. Here he is telling everyone how impressed he was by the behavior of the Rabun Gap students. |
| After the Alumni Meeting we all went to the Rearden Theatre for Ms. Ruby's dance. Karen and Ralph Merrow with Pat Wright McNulty heading into the theatre. |
Janie Owens introduced Mrs. Ruby Brown van Rooyen who is our oldest alumna. She graduated in 1925. She preformed several dances for our pleasure. |
Here she dances the waltz with her partner. |
In Hawaiian costume, Ms. Ruby danced the hula with grace and style. |
We were all delighted by Ms. Ruby's dances. She is an artist who enjoys her art at the age of 98. |
| Janie thanked Ms. Ruby for entertaining the alumni body. We really enjoyed her performance and gave her a standing ovation. |
After the dance, we gathered in front of the A&T Building for a group picture. The 50's won a prize for having the most present. |
The barn tour was scheduled after the group picture. The only way to get there was to climb the hill to the dairy barn. It was a steep hill. Here Naida Dees Tanner is getting a helping hand from Ron Ward. |
Emily Weaver watches as Carroll Parkerson crests the hill. Wilma Kelly Hoilman, with assistance from Ken Ward, made the climb. |
| When asked about the slot in the floor, Ron ward, who was on the dairy crew, explained how the trough/slot in the concrete floor was used. |
With Dale and James to assist in the demonstration. Ron explained that the cow (him) was lined up in the milking station. The milker (Dale) attached the milking machine to the cow. The cow dutifully pooped in the trough while being milked. James had the job of hosing out the manure afterwards. Ron watched to make sure Dale didn't attach anything during the demo. |
Rodney Pless toured the hayloft. He commented that you could still store a lot of hay up there. The old barn's rafter system is a work of art. |
Harold Thurmond, Dale Denham Shaffield, Tom Weaver, Angie Brack Parkerson, Rodney Pless, Pat Wright McNulty, and Ken McNulty listen attentively to Dale. Maybe she was demonstrating the correct way to wear boots in a dairy barn. |
Tom, Rodney, and Angie watch Pat who found some kittens in the loft. |
The animal stalls in the barn were used for the lambs until recently. Now they are empty. |
Rodney took Angie, Pat and Ken on a tour of the "Mule Barn". He checked out all the old and new farm equipment stored there. |
James Smith took Beverly Guthrie Lougher over to see the old Slaughter House. |
James stands in front of "The Tree". This tree was decorated with animal parts that were thrown into the branches from the slaughter house. We won't go into what animal parts. |
